Honorable Mention
Fruit Cocktail
Gary Blankenship

Fruit Cocktail, Today’s Desert

She loves cherries,
dark, red, overripe
juice drips down her chin
like sweet blood without the copper taste.

Dreams of pineapple linger -
Dangerous and forbidding on the outside;
But peel the prickly covering,
Rid the spikes from the crown,
And heaven awaits.
Soft, sweet and succulent
To the one willing to risk it all.

Bing or Royal Ann.
Maraschino or pie,
she slurps down the sour,
lingers over sweet like starlings in spring.

The hedonist’s fantasy -
Yielding flesh drips sparkling nectar
Spiced with a touch of acid.
Risk the burn,
Splay golden treasure
Across a platter
And serve willingly.

Watch her tongue
as she ties the stem
into a lover’s knot,
and spits the seed to ring bells across town.

Desire's within reach where
Bounty of sensual delights overflow.
Here, it's all or none.
Plunge deeper -
Touch, taste, inhale:
Devour hungrily
As juice drips down your chin.

When she is through
dining on cherries,
she will move on to you
to tie your stem in knots and keep your seed.

Desire runs fast and high
Where flesh and fruit devoured;
as you sup, be careful
you are not dinner.
